OASIS CANTINA: KILROYZ KEEPER KABANA

Published by Gary Davenport On May - 1 - 2009

While I try in vain to wrap my head around the idea of Terrell Owens in Buffalo (Buffalo? T.O. and Drew Rosenmouth in BUFFALO? Oh yeah, this will end well) let’s take a look at some keeper and dynasty league questions.

If you have a keeper, dynasty, or other fantasy football question you’d like answered you can Ask the Fantasy Football Oasis Staff here and visit the Fantasy Football Oasis Help Forums here!

I was recently offered the 1.09 rookie pick and a 2010 1st round rookie pick (likely in the 8 to 12 range) for Kevin Smith in a 12 team PPR dynasty league. Good deal?
Steve W. – Grillsalot, TX

Not really. Yes it’s two first round picks, but once you get toward the back end of the first round you’re as apt to find a Chris Henry as a Chris Johnson, while in Kevin Smith you have a 22 year-old Top 20 (in PPR) running back who had 1,200+ total yards and 8 scores as a rookie for an 0-16 nightmare of a team. Add in that Smith is the more-or-less featured back (in an era where that’s becoming more exception than rule), and it would take significantly more than that for me to move him.

I’m in a 12 team keeper league where we keep 3 players. Each player kept costs one round higher than we drafted them. For example, I drafted Brandon Jacobs in the 5th Round in 2008, so to keep him in 2009, he would become my 4th round pick. Right now, I’m looking to keep Roddy White in the 6th and Jacobs in the 4th.

I won the league so I’ll be drafting at the turn, and need to decide between keeping Maurice Jones-Drew as my first round pick (#12), who I would NOT be able to keep in beyond 2009, and Frank Gore as my second round pick (#13). I would then have the option of keeping him again in 2010, but would lose MJD in the process. Who’s the keeper?
J. Rolle – Leberlabs, CA

As much as I like Maurice Jones-Drew and his chances in 2009 (and I like them just fine), I think you have to keep Frank Gore. Mike Singletary is going to pound the rock in San Francisco, and while the picks you give up in 2009 are nearly identical the option of keeping Gore again in 2010 seals the deal for me.

What’s your early take on this year’s wide receiver rookie class from a dynasty perspective?
Eric W. – Rancho Kookamonga, CA

My Pre-Draft Top 5, which could change as situations do….

1.) Darrius Heyward-Bey – Yes, you read that right. He’s a boom/bust pick, but he has great size, blistering speed…best tools of the bunch.
2.) Michael Crabtree – College numbers inflated by system, and he’s not a scorcher, but he’s big, strong, and has great hands.
3.) Percy Harvin – Durability’s a concern, but he’s an electric talent who’s a threat to score with every touch.
4.) Jeremy Maclin – Added value in return yardage leagues, but I’ll admit I have my doubts about how this speedster will translate from Missouri to the NFL.
5.) Hakeem Nicks – Hands, Size, and a knack for getting open. Likely the best possession WR of the class, so should have added value in PPR.

I just inherited a dynasty team where I now own three New York Jets linebackers. Could you give me your thoughts on David Harris, Bart Scott, and Calvin Pace for 2009 and beyond?
A. Lewis – Outside Tim Tebow’s Bedroom Window, FL

I’d rank them, in Dynasty:
1.) David Harris – The Scott signing hurts, especially if Harris is asked to play Scott’s old role in Baltimore, which means engaging more blockers, but Harris flat has a nose for the football (over 200 tackles in 27 games) so I can’t see him falling farther than solid LB2, and he’s only 25.
2.) Bart Scott – If Scott does indeed play the Ray Lewis role in Rex Ryan’s Jets’ defense then that will mean plenty of opportunities, and an LB2 finish isn’t out of reach, but I’m not as enamored as some with Scott and he’s 3 years older than Harris.
3.) Calvin Pace – The switch to a more aggressive scheme by the Jets may result in a slight uptick in value, but he just doesn’t get the kind of consistent numbers to make him more than a marginal fantasy LB at best.
