Fantasy Football Oasis | Best Game Day Beers

There is usually one common beverage when it comes to most football fans....Beer. So we have put together a little guide for all the aspiring beer connisseurs out there. Each of our staff members have listed their favorite brews for watching their teams play every week. We will also spotlight some of the their favorite local brews from their neighborhood breweries.

Favorite Local Beers - Minnesota

1. Grainbelt Premium - Known locally by its nickname "Primo", it is a longtime Minnesota tradition. Despite its somewhat plain and old-fashioned label, this beer is amazing, and also affordable, only $9.99 for a 12-pack of bottles. Not to mention that it is currently brewed at the Schell's Brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota (about a fifteen-minute drive from where I grew up). It is a light lager similar to Budlight or Miller Lite, but with a better taste. I cannot tell you how many non-Minnesotans I have turned on to this beer, and they all love it. There is a reason it is known as "The Official Beer of Fantasy Football" by our local sports radio station.

2. Finnegan's Irish Amber - A relatively new beer, first brewed in 1999, not only is this a great local Irish Amber brew, the brewery gives all profits to local Minnesota charities. So if you like Irish style beers, this is a very tasty one for you. Plus you are bound to get a little bit of good karma for buying it. A great place to get a pint of this stuff on tap is one of my favorite bars in downtown Minneapolis "The Local". Visit finnegans.org for more info on this great Minnesota beer.

3. Schell's Firebrick - Very similar to a Killian's Irish Red, but with a hometown taste, it is great for people who like some flavor in their beer, instead of the mainstream light beers. It has some girth to it, but not too much. In fact, any beer brewed by Schell's, a Minnesota Landmark, is worth your money, and if you are ever near New Ulm(about 2 hours from Minneapolis) near the end of February make the trip and attend Schell's "Bock Fest", it's a great party for the beer lover.

Favorite Local Beers - Ohio

1. Eliot Ness Amber Lager – My favorite beer, as well as my local favorite, Eliot Ness is an amber lager with rich, fragrant malt flavors balanced by crisp, noble hops. “Named after one of Cleveland's most respected safety directors who frequented the Brewpub's bar during his tenure from 1935-1941 and, according to popular legend, was responsible for the bullet holes in the bar still evident today” (according to www.greatlakesbrewing.com). This beer boasts seven World Beer Championship gold medals, and is best enjoyed within a heavily frost mug at Ray’s Place in Kent, OH (www.raysplacekent.com). (ABV: 6.2% ABW: 5.0% IBU: 35)

2. Christmas Ale – A Great Lakes Brewing Company (www.greatlakesbrewing.com) classic, this holiday ale is brewed with honey and spiced with fresh ginger and cinnamon. Great with the massive amounts of food that are served during the holiday season, the beer has established a cult-like following on the internet. Nothing makes a Cleveland native reconsider moving more than the prospect of not being able to find this three-time World Beer Championship gold medal winner. (ABV: 7.5% ABW: 6.0% IBU: 40)

3. Dortmunder Gold Lager – The flagship of the Great Lakes Brewing Company (www.greatlakesbrewing.com) fleet, Dortmunder Gold Lager is a smooth lager with a delicate balance between sweet malt and dry hop flavors. This beer has a long resume, including 10 World Beer Championship gold medals, and four World Beer Championship “World Champion” titles. It’s the perfect beer to go with anything, and is great whether it’s the first kickoff in August or when the clock winds down in February. Crack one open before kickoff and you won’t be disappointed. (ABV: 5.8% ABW: 4.3% IBU: 30)
